Ofwat proposes a smart-meter-led leakage reporting method
What's New? Ofwat opened consultation on revising leakage reporting as smart-meter coverage grows. Options include stronger customer-meter integration, a possible top-down-only model, alternatives to night-flow extrapolation, granular upstream monitoring, standards, incentives, and shadow reporting.

Why It Matters: Measurement reform can improve comparability and investment targeting, but a revised baseline may create apparent performance changes before physical leakage changes. Regulatory transition design will determine whether utilities can separate methodological effects from operating gains.

What's Next? The consultation closes in October. The final method, implementation timetable, metering standards, and any parallel-reporting requirements will define near-term demand for data integration, balance validation, and network monitoring capability and cost.

Grangemockler nature-based wastewater treatment moves into construction

Why It Matters: Construction provides stronger evidence than a concept announcement, but projected energy, carbon, and habitat benefits are not yet demonstrated operating outcomes. Compliance, maintenance, land needs, and seasonal performance remain decisive transferability tests.

Strategic Impact: Verified operating results could strengthen nature-based treatment as an option where conventional systems are costly. Until those results emerge, Grangemockler is best treated as a delivery reference rather than proven replication evidence.
